Learning objectives
The purpose of the course is to study in depth a series of topics that cannot be adequately dealt with in the I.C. of Biological Chemistry and Clinical Biochemistry. In this way, the student will be able to acquire the knowledge necessary for understanding the essential concepts of Clinical Biochemistry and of the associated diagnostic techniques.
Course unit content
<br />- Post-translational modifications and cell compartmentation in the metabolic control of homeostasis of chemico-clinical parameters. <br />
<br />
- Use of oxygen, production of reactive species of O2 and of N. Biological damage and antioxidant defences. <br />
<br />
- Plasma proteins; membranes and membrane proteins. <br />
<br />
- Carbohydrate metabolism and regulation of glycaemia. <br />
<br />
- &nbs p; Lipid metabolism and plasma lipoproteins. <br />
<br />
- Amino acid metabolism; production and disposal of ammonia and urea. <br />
<br />
- Catabolism of heme and of purine and pyrimidine bases. <br />
<br />
- Practical exercises in the laboratory that include the preparation of reactives (use of analytical scales, calibrated glassware; calculations on the preparation of solutions of known strength), execution of an analytical method (calibration of automatic pipettes), data analysis and handling (guide to the use of statistical analysis software and spreadsheets) for dosing proteins, glucose, creatinine, LDH (activity), IL-6 (ELISA immuno method), in a biological sample.
