Integrated course unit module: SPECIALIST MEDICINE II

Learning objectives

The teaching course has the goal to provide students the instruments and theoretical concepts for studying the main modifications of the various organ systems during the aging process. Furthermore it has the purpose to illustrate the physiopathology of the main geriatric syndromes , an essential component for a correct approach (both medical and non medical) to the aging subjects and for a correct management of the old patient in the various clinical settings.

Students must have passed the exams of preceding years

Course unit content

The course will analyse various aspects of ageing: 1. Population ageing and its consequences for social and health care; 2. Biology of ageing with the main theories of ageing 3. Physiology of ageing: ageing of the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, kidney, immune system, endocrine system, skeletal muscle tissue (sarcopenia), bone and brain; 4. The major geriatric syndromes with particular attention given to decline of cognitive function and dementias; 5. Overview of multidimensional evaluation of the geriatric patient; 6. Rehabilitation in the field of geriatrics, general principles. Particular attention will be given to the analysis of modifications to body composition during the ageing process by evaluating the development of sarcopenia and its effects on patients’ state of health<br />
