Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with the tools and theoretical concepts required for the study of the main modifications which occur during ageing to various bodily organs and systems and to set out the physiopathological bases underlying the major geriatric syndromes, essential components of a correct approach to elderly patients. Particular attention will be given to the mechanisms underlying modifications to body composition, the development of sarcopenia and related effects upon the state of health of elderly patients.

Course unit content

<p>The course will analyse various aspects of ageing: 1. Population ageing and its consequences for social and health care; 2. Biology of ageing with the main theories of ageing 3. Physiology of ageing: ageing of the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, kidney, immune system, endocrine system, skeletal muscle tissue (sarcopenia), bone and brain; 4. The major geriatric syndromes with particular attention given to decline of cognitive function and dementias; 5. Overview of multidimensional evaluation of the geriatric patient; 6. “Fragile” elderly patients. </p>
