Learning objectives

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to gothic themes and stereotypes by means of a diachronic analysis, from the XVIII th century up to nowadays.

<em>Critical Approaches to the Gothic</em><br />
The word "Gothic" has a wide variety of meanings. It is used in a number of different fields: as a literary term, as a historical term, as an artistic term, as an architectural term. Starting from the analysis of these dimentions, the course will outline contexts and styles of the "gothic fiction", from the XVIII th century up to nowadays.  Our readings will include The Castle of Otranto (1764), Frankenstein (1818), Dracula (1897), The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), I am Legend (1954) and Martha Peake (2000) . Moreover, we will analyse the mise en scène of these gothic classics.
