Learning objectives

<br />To provide students with a general knowledge of the concepts on safety and health prevention and protection during the work, and their applications, with special reference to aspects concerning the presence and the use of chemical products, and, in this case, a basic knowledge of regulations for environmental protection.

<br />Safety concept and culture. Danger and risk. Risk sources.<br />General survey of italian laws on safety, in particular in presence of chemicals. D.Lgs. 626/94 as updated: general parts, chemical agents, carcinogens and mutagens, explosive atmospheres. Risk evaluation. Preventive and protective measures. Occupational exposure. Monitoring. Medical surveillance.<br />Classification and labelling of dangerous substances. D.Lgs 52/1997 (93/32/EC dir.) with updatings; notification before placing on market. Definitions; symbols; R,S-Phrases; substances identification (CAS, EC, European inventory).<br />Classification and labelling of dangerous preparations; D.Lgs. 65/2003 (1999/45/EC and 2001/60/EC dir.). <br />Materials Safety Data Sheets (D.M. 7.9.2002 from 2001/58/EC dir.).<br />Fire prevention. Definitions. Chemical and physical properties. Fire types. Supplies and equipment; extinguishing agents; extinguishers; allocation. D.M. 10.3.1998; fire risk evaluation. Inspections. Emergency exits. Activities subject to Fire Department control. Authorizations course. Chemical reactivity: hazards, risk sources; physical-chemical factors; chemical structure and reactivity; polymerizable, endothermic, pyroforic, peroxydizable, redox compounds; reactive to water or incompatible substances. Previsional methods.<br />Dust explosion hazards. Safety in chemical laboratories. Layout. Architectural aspects. Electric plants. Fluid utilities. Liquid and gaseous effluents. Waste. Air conditioning and ventilation. Equipment and technical furnishing. Hoods, glove boxes, local exhaust systems. HEPA, ULPA, actived carbon filters. Cabinets for flammable and for dangerous to health substances; refrigerators. Glass equipment. Vacuum equipment. Heating systems. Control and alarm systems. Storage rooms for flammable and combustible materials and for “toxic gases”. Rooms with radioactive substances.  “Home-made” equipment. Internal transportation.
