Learning objectives

The course aims at providing students with a basic knowledge of public international law, EC law and of the system of human rights protection of the Council of Europe.

Course unit content

The course will address the following subjects:<br />
• General features of the international legal system.<br />
• Subjects of international law: States and International Organisations <br />
• Sources of international law: custom and treaties.<br />
• International law in domestic legal systems <br />
• State responsibility and peaceful settlement of disputes<br />
• The role of the UN in ensuring international peace and security<br />
• EU and EC: institutions<br />
• Sources of EC law: treaties, regulations, directives and decisions<br />
• Community law and the domestic legal system<br />
• Individuals in international law and the international protection of human rights in the European region<br />
