The module deals with structures of complex digital systems, with particular emphasys on monolithic integrated circuits

Course unit content

Complex digital systems: classification and partition in classes of functionally homogeneous subsystems. <br />
<br />
Design criteria: structure and hierarchy of systems. <br />
Signal processing subsystems: arithmetic circuits. Integer adders, carry-propagation issues. <br />
<br />
Serial and parallel multipliers; circuits based on Booth encoding; dividers. <br />
<br />
Floating point arithmetic (IEEE-754) and related processing subsystems.<br />
 <br />
Notes on input / output subsystems and the organization of control units. <br />
<br />
Synchronization problems: clock distribution and synchronization strategies. <br />
Notes on asynchronous, self-timed systems. <br />
<br />
