Learning objectives

The course aims to provide an overview of the main hydraulic plant and equipment not discussed in other courses (Hydraulic Constructions, Territorial Hydraulic Protection, Hydraulic Infrastructure). Special consideration is given to supply schemes under pressure, hydroelectric plants, and the main types of open channel systems, for irrigation and reclamation purposes.

Prerequisites

Hydraulics, Hydrology, Geotechnics, Construction Science.

Course unit content

Water adductions: basic gravity and lifting schemes, control of transients, accumulation areas and surge tanks, piezometric wells.
Hydroelectric plants: basic schemes, plants with and without outflow regulation, pressure pipes in high head plants, current structures and special pieces in pipes, regulators, shut-off and safety parts, sizing calculations.
Hydraulic turbines: general characteristics, types and functional characteristics, fundamental equation of hydraulic turbines, similarity and characteristic number of revolutions, characteristic operating curves, operating problems of the machines.
Hydroelectric power plants: utilization programmes, automatic control of hydroelectric units, pressure control and runaway speed of the units.
Irrigation systems: purpose and types, relationships between crops, soil and climate, irrigation equipment, irrigation networks, watering methods and patterns. Drainage networks: review of hydrology, purpose, hydraulic sizing.

There are 4 numerical exercises, of which 2 are compulsory to be chosen from: 1) mass oscillation calculation, 2) water hammer calculation, 3) irrigation network calculation, 4) drainage network calculation. The exercises require the general use of a PC and some specific tools provided in the course.

Teaching methods

The exercise papers must be handed in at least 7 days before the examination to be allowed to sit for the exam that has two parts: A) discussion of the exercises, with possible practical test on the use of the calculation tools used; B) questions on the topics of the course programme in verbal or written form, as preferred by the candidate.
