Learning objectives
Acquisition of the methodological, literary and language skills required for reading and interpreting Latin authors in the original.

Prerequisites

The absence of gaps in students’ level of preparation will be verified through a preliminary written exam consisting of a translation from Latin of an author from the classical age.

Course unit content
Module A: readings from Lucilius, Horace, Persius and Juvenal to gain familiarity with the development of the genre.
Module B: within the context of the satire of Lucilius and Juvenal, the course will examine significant passages in relation to the so-called indignatio from the metrical, stylistic and content point of view, which is not the prerogative of Juvenal alone. The hypothesis to be demonstrated is that so-called “Bakhtinian double-voicing” may be paralleled by a “tragic double-voicing” in the indignatio.
