Learning objectives
As consistent with the aims of a specialist degree, this course will provide students with an advanced understanding of Greek history as well as the techniques and capacity to conduct autonomous research activity. <br />

Prerequisites
Students must possess the requirements requested by the teaching body to enter the specialist degree course. A basic knowledge of Greek is recommended.
Course unit content
The course, part of module B in the three year Greek history course but autonomous and based on seminars, is entitled: “Explain and recount a war: Tucidide and the Peloponnesian War”. It will explore some very important aspects in order to understand the historical phenomenon of the Peloponnesian War – e.g. its causes, the changeable strategies of the two contenders, the western politics of Athens - by closely analysing the text and narrative techniques of Tucidide as well as, where possible, by comparing his accounts with other sources. <br />

Bibliography
Students are requested to read the following for a general historical overview: <br />
U. Fantasia, La Guerra del Peloponneso, Roma, Carocci (currently being published) <br />
Furthermore, students must also read, at least translated versions, of Tucidide’s first two “History” books (the recommended edition of the second book is: Tucidide, La Guerra del Peloponneso, Libro II, a cura di U. Fantasia, Pisa, ETS, 2003). <br />
A specific bibliography will be supplied for each subject and agreed upon by the lecturer with each student. <br />
Teaching methods
The course will mainly be taught in seminar form with active participation expected from all students. The evaluation will consist of an oral exam in which the results of the autonomous research by individual students will also be discussed. <br />
