Course unit content

In the seminar we will focus on the debate between Alexius Meinong and Bertrand Russell on the subsistance of non-existing objects.

In the first part we will concentrate on Meinong's theory of objects. We have a close look at the background of the theory: Franz Brentano's notion of intentionality (and the critique raised by Twardowski, Husserl, together with later formulations of the theory by Brentano).

In the second part we will analyse the development (and the discontinuity) in Bertrand Russell's theory and his critique of Meinong.
