Things and persons, facts and values

The course aims at examining the ways of investigating – above all in contemporary philosophy – the difference between things and persons on the one hand, between facts and values on the other hand, more generally among different forms, modalities and senses of reality; the course aims also at discussing various argumentations in favour of possible analogies among different forms of reality, especially referring to thought of Husserl, Heidegger, Strawson, Putnam.
Teaching methods

Unit B of the History of Philosophy course will provide students in the two-year advanced program the required historical and theoretical background to take un the specific topics in Unit C, that is organised to alternate classroom lectures with seminar work. Through detailed analysis of a major work in the history of thought – the translation of whose key passages are checked against the original text – students will become acquainted with a specific moment in the history of philosophy and the forms of conceptual analysis and argumentation used to take on a series of issues. During the seminars, students will present in-depth readings they have done on their own and will also plan a written work.
The oral exam consists of an independently-prepared essay of the issues covered and discussion of this essay that will be submitted and corrected before the exam.
