Course unit content

Title: The re-elaboration of football heroes in Brazilian and Portuguese literature.

The course will analyse the process in which one of the fundamental elements of popular culture, football with its personalities and teams, has been appropriated by “high” culture and how this has decisively contributed to the creation of real contemporary heroes who, removed from their historical context and contingency, have been transformed into icons which contain absolute values and are immortal. Both the Portuguese and the Brazilian situations will be examined. These are different not so much for the stronger or weaker impact of the footballing phenomenon but for the different inclusion of this phenomenon in their literature.
