Learning objectives

The course offers an introduction to a key theme in 18th and 19th century German literature. Students will learn how to identify the general trends in the Bildungsroman genre, by means of a detailed study of individual works, exploring the specific characteristics of the phenomenon according to its context. Students will take an active part in this learning process by preparing brief essays on given subjects, to be consigned during the course.

Course unit content

The course looks at a fundamental theme in 18th and 19th century German literature, the Bildungsroman. By means of some of the most important works in this genre, students will study its principal themes, the way in which they developed over the course of time, and the variations added according to the approach of individual authors working in the period of Classicism and Romanticism. <br />
