Learning objectives

<p>Objectives of the course: The course focuses on the various modalities of approach to a plurality of literary and para-literary texts, offering examples of contextualized analyses which also highlight some specific themes and strategies of discourse.</p>

Prerequisites

Prerequisites: Being addressed to first year students of the 'Laurea Specialistica', the course takes for granted prior knowledge of the history of English literature and the ability to approach texts in the original language. Some familiarity with critical terminology and critical schools is also required.

Course unit content

<p>Title of the course: Conspirators, rebels, revolutionaries and the emergence of the idea of popular sovereignty. Course contents: In England, the idea of popular sovereignty was definitely sanctioned by John Locke's two <em>Treatises of Government</em> (1690). This course explores the emrgence of this idea in the literary and para-literary texts which preceded and commented on the two seventeenth-century English revolutions, including some of Shakespeare's history and Roman plays, John Milton's tracts and <em>Paradise Lost</em>, John Dryden's <em>Absalom and Achitophel</em>.</p>

<p>Recommended readings: For the bibliography, which is inclusive of general texts on the Renaissance and post-Renaissance periods, and critical studies on specific texts authors and genres, students are referred to the program which is available at the Department of Foreign Languages, v.le S,  Michele 9 and on the Internet.</p>

Teaching methods

The course consists of didactic units which ultimately aim at developing specific abilities in the critical appreciation of literary texts in English. Consequently, assessment takes into consideration linguistic and critical skills and students' abilities to assimilate, elaborate and select notions. Language of instruction: Italian.
