Learning objectives

Examination of topics involving hand-copied codices and the first printed books. From oral to written; birth of printing, description of old books.

Course unit content

<br />Structure, birth and history of the book during the 15th to 18th centuries. <br />
Following a discussion of the Gutenberg revolution and techniques in bookmaking over the centuries, documents regarding the success and failure, through involvement of the censor, in published works will be presented. <br />

Compulsory part. <br />
<br />
History of the printed book and connection with hand-copied manuscripts. Gutenberg printing techniques. <br />
<br />
Students must know the general outline of the structure of printed books and the techniques of describing and cataloging old books (15th – 18th centuries). <br />
<br />
Independent reading of materials distributed and photocopied handouts during the course of the lectures. <br />
