Course unit content

The Emilia-Romagna region: structure, evolution, perspectives of development in the era of globalization

The course will illustrate the characteristics and specificities of the Emilia-Romagna region through the research tools provided by the regional geography approach. The Emilia-Romagna region was born as the merging of more pre-unitarian states, thus including territories with different backgrounds in settlement patterns and economic activities. During the period that followed the Second World War this area became a model of administrative governance and political cohesion, thus consolidating a spread territorial model of scattered small-medium enterprises (the so-called "Third Italy", to follow Arnaldo Bagnasco's terminology). Today the Emilia-Romagna region is called to renovated efforts in planning and governance related to processes of economic readjustment and increased international competition.
