Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with adequate knowledge of the history and culture of the Slavs and to expose them to the basic outlines of phonetics, morphology and syntax of the paleo-Slavic language.
Course unit content
The course is structured in two modules. The first examines the history and culture of the Slavs: the origin and homeland of the Slavs, Slavic peoples and languages; Slavic linguistic unity: Common Slavic; the Cyrillo-Methodian mission; old Slavic writing systems: the Glagolitic alphabet, the Cyrillic alphabet. Finally it will trace a historical outline of Slavic philology and the literary-historical subdivisions of modern Slavic languages.
The second module includes the study of the phonetic structure of ancient Slavic: from Indo-European to Slavic vocalism; the law of the open syllable, syllabic harmony and the three palatalisations. In addition it will introduce elements of paleo-Slavic grammar: the nominal, pronominal and verbal categories and an overview of historical syntax. The practical part includes a reading and linguistic/philological commentary of a passage from the Codex Zoographensis (11th century).
