Course unit content

Title: Christianity and Modernity in the Understanding of Ernst Troeltsch
According to Troeltsch, starting with the Nineteenth Century Christianity has gone back being a relevant autonomous element of the states’ life and carrying out a powerful universal mission. On the other hand, its intrinsic contrast with Culture and Science has worsened and «the problem of a choice between irreligiousness, confessional restoration, free development of Christianity and genesis of a completely new religion» (Das Neunzehnte Jahrhundert) has started to surface.

In the first module the evolution of Troeltsch’s understanding of Christianity will be outlined.
In the second module will be analysed some especially significant writings concerning these issues.
