Learning objectives

The course promotes writing ability in the conception, structuring of the text, layout and verification phases. It develops linguistic abilities (in particular, lexical ability); guides students towards the use of consultation tools (dictionaries, grammar texts, bibliographies, catalogues, etc.); introduces video-writing techniques and knowledge of editorial rules. <br />

Course unit content

Course title: A. Writing: Theoretical aspects. B. Applications, protocols, strategies. The course is composed of two modules: Module A (5 credits): Verbal communication. Semantics: Personal encyclopaedia and lexical heritage. The function of words in the issuer-receiver relationship: connotations and denotations. Morphology and syntax from a functional viewpoint. Modelling of the different textual typologies. <br />
Module B. (5 credits): Planning of texts: outlines, conceptual maps. Layout strategies. Revision: definition of evaluation protocols for texts. Typology of writing errors and the relating correction strategies. <br />

Teaching methods

The course is split into four parts. Part one is dedicated to theory; part two involves reading and commenting on texts; part three is dedicated to work sheets on the most important aspects in the production of writing; and part four is reserved for illustrating the written submissions and corrections produced by students (a sample). The correction of course exercises is scheduled during receiving hours and their return and evaluation will take place during the oral exam. <br />
