Course unit content

The course outlines and interprets the transformation processes that were the basis for the modern distribution system for the first time in the Italian academic system. Attention is focused on the transformations that followed the Industrial Revolution and deals with some country-cases from the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries.
The course highlights the first part of the birth of large scale distribution in Europe from the Nineteenth Century to the first half of the Twentieth Century. Particular attention is dedicated to the origins of large retail in Great Britain and in Germany, and to the Western European distribution system in the 1960s.
In the second part, the Italian case in the second half of the Twentieth Century is analysed to illustrate the developmental process of large scale distributions in an “agricultural” country that encounters an extraordinary industrialisation process.
The absence of an Italian historiographical tradition on the subject of distribution dictates the use of English scientific literature at least in part.
