Learning objectives

The course has been designed to provide students with the general outline of modern history, not only in Italy (unit A) and to take on (in unit B) an aspect of our society that is normally little-examined because it is wrongly considered “unworthy” or of secondary importance, and as a result left to the arena of current events and statistics.

Course unit content
The course is divided into two units:

1. Unit A (5 credits): introductory section dedicated to the major themes and issues of modern history from 1815 to 1980.
2. Unit B (5 credits): specialised section dedicated to “History of Italy and history of sports”. Sports are one of the most visible and intrusive dimensions of contemporary society. Some sports exemplify more than others that interaction between various aspects of civil society: politics, economy, culture, free time. The course will examine some of the events and personalities that have contributed to building the tremendous popularity of sports during the 20th century and in the hearts of society in general.
