Learning objectives

<br />The purpose of the course of Electromagnetic Properties of Matter is to provide a deeper insight into some theoretical aspects of Magnetism in Solids, and in particular into fundamental interactions of solid state magnetism.

Prerequisites

Basic notions of quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular physics, solid state physics.

Course unit content

<br />The course of Electromagnetic Properties of Matter involves theoretical aspects of Magnetism in Solids, with emphasis to fundamental interactions of solid state magnetism, in particular crystal electric field and exchange interaction. The main arguments are:<br />- electronic states of transition ions in crystals;<br />- crystal field theory and tensor operators;<br />- calculation of the physical observables: magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, g-factor, hyperfine field, nuclear quadrupole splitting, Schottky specific heat and entropy, neutron inelastic scattering cross section;<br />- exchange interaction in insulators, superexchange, antisimmetric exchange and weak ferromagnetism;<br />- mean field theory and magnetic order;<br />- exchange and correlation effects in metallic systems.<br />Possible applications could be in the field of high-Tc superconductors, heavy fermions, supermagnets, magnetic molecules.<br />
