Learning objectives

<br />The aim of the Curse is to treat the concepts on the basis of the physical and chemical properties of the matter, following a phenomenological and theoretical path.

Prerequisites

<br />The Course requires the knowledge of elements of Electromagnetism, of Classical Statistics, of Relativity, of Waves and Optics.  

Course unit content

<br />Recalls. Thermal radiation and Planck¿s postulate. Einstein¿s quantum theory. The photoelectric effect. The Compton Effect. The models of the atom. The quantization rules.  <br />One-electron atoms. Probability densities. Orbital angular momentum. Orbital magnetic dipole moments. The electron spin. The spin-orbit interaction. Transition rates and selection rules.<br />Multielectron atoms. Identical particles. The helium atom. The Hartree theory. The periodic table. X-ray spectra. The Russel-Saunders  coupling. Atoms in electric and magnetic fields. The population of electronic states. Laser. <br />Molecules. Ionic and covalent bonds. The adiabatic principle. Molecular orbitals. Rotation, vibration and electronic spectra. The Franck-Cordon diagram. Fluorescence and phosphorescence. <br />Solids. Phase diagrams and phase transitions. Liquids, solids and metastable states. Electronic and vibration bands. Metals, insulators, semiconductors, magnetic and superconducting materials.
