Learning objectives

<br />The purpose of the course is to provide basic concepts of quantum mechanics, illustrated by the simplest applications.

Prerequisites

Calculus, mathematical methods for physics, classical mechanics.

Course unit content

<br />Classical physics at the end of the XIX century. Blackbody radiation. Photoelectric effect. Atomic models of Rutherford and Bohr. Wave and particle aspects of radiation and matter.<br />Wavefunction, Schrodinger equation. Axioms of quantum mechanics. Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Applications (free particle, particle in a box, potential well, potential barrier, tunnel effect, harmonic oscillator). Schrodinger equation for a central potential. Hydrogen atom. Spin.
