Learning objectives

- To know the main environmental certification tools (EMS, LCA, Ecolabel, etc.) <br />
- To understand the reasons why companies adopt environmental certification systems <br />
- To know the nature and structure of ISO14001 and EMAS <br />
- To understand the costs, benefits, opportunities and limits of environmental management systems <br />
- To understand what conducting a LCA study involves. <br />

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of environmental sciences.

Course unit content

INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT POLICIES FOR POLLUTION CONTROL. Global ecological problems and widespread impacts. The concept of environmental externality. Sustainability and environmental policies. From “Command and Control” policies to fiscal policies and voluntary agreements. The producer’s full responsibility. <br />
BUSINESS ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BUSINESS AND ENVIRONMENT. The pressures which companies are under with regard to the environment. The reaction of companies: passive strategies, anticipative strategy, proactive strategies. Company environmental management tools. <br />

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS. Environmental policy and the involvement of management. The Initial Environmental Assessment. Identification of key environmental aspects and of priorities. Definition of objectives and programmes. Drafting of procedures. Documentation management. Internal auditing activities. Revision of objectives. The Environmental Declaration. <br />
CERTIFICATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS. The certification of environmental management systems: the international standard, ISO14001-4 and the European regulation, EMAS. Costs and length of wait for certification. Advantages of certification. Certifying bodies. Accreditation of Inspectors. <br />

OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT TOOLS FOR COMPANIES. The integrated Quality, Safety and Environment system. The most recent regulations for business environmental management: the IPPC and the Seveso BIS. Reporting and communication with the public administration and the public. Life cycle assessment. The ecolabel and the Community system of product labelling. Company environmental statements. Company environmental performance indicators. <br />
