Learning objectives

To introduce second year students of Tecnology and Chemistry Science degree to some basic concepts of inorganic chemistry.

Course unit content

<br />Basic concepts of molecular topologies. Symmetry. VSEPR teory. The elements of the main group. Fundamental concepts for transition metal complexes. Coordination chemistry: structural aspects and isomerism. Optical activity. Description of the practical inorganic experiments.<br />Inorganic experiments:<br />Preparation and characterisation of the cis- and trans-[Cu(glyO)2].H2O complexes.<br />Preparation and characterisation of penta(thiourea)dicopper(I) sulfate trihydrate.<br />Preparation and resolution of the enantiomers d,l-[Co(en)3]I3.H2O. <br />Preparation and characterisation of a copper oxalate complex KaCub(C2O4)c.dH2O. <br />Linkage isomerism: preparation and characterisation of [Co(NH3)5NO2]Cl2 and <br />[Co(NH3)5ONO]Cl2 <br />Preparation of d-[Co(en)3]I3.H2O by a partial asymmetric synthesis. <br />
