Learning objectives

At the end of the course students should be able to utilize elements of quantitative and molecular genetics to cope with the problems of conservation of biodiversity of crops and officinalis plants.<br />

Prerequisites

Introduction to formal genetics. Mendel's laws and deviations from Mendel's laws.<br />

Course unit content

Basic quantitative genetics. Plant breeding systems. Vegetative propagation and apomixis. Sexual reproduction. Dioecious and monoecious plants. Inbreeding. Heterosis. Growth genetic control. Plant genetic biochemistry. Origin and evolution of crops, centres of origin of cultivated plants. Genetic diversity distribution. Genetic resources. Interspecific hybridization. Spontaneous and induced auto andallo-polyploidy. Trisomy, monosomy and nullisomy. Addition and substitution lines. Introduction to GMOs technology. <br />
