A deeper inside on the role of microorganisms in mineral cycling whit the aim of educating the students to evaluation and management of these processes.

Course unit content
<br />Microbial biogeochemistry: the ecophysiology of mineral cycling. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX), application, eco-physiology and biodiversity of ammonium oxidizing bacteria. Nitrogen fixation in soils and waters. Methanogenesis and methanotrophy. Aerobic and anaerobic methane oxidation. Acetogenesis, chemolithoautotrophy and photosyntesis. Hydrolysis of organic polymers. Cellulolitic, amylolitic and ligninolitic microorganisms. EBPR (Enhanced Bacterial Phosphorus Removal) in sewage treatment systems. Social behaviour of microorganisms (quorum sensing, biofilm formation).Microbial toxins: algal blooms and toxin production.
