Learning objectives
Provide fundamental concepts concerning the use of transition metals in homogeneous catalysis.
Course unit content
1) Base concept: homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, main differences. Transition metal electron counting, MLX method. Type of bonds in organometallic compounds.
2) Elemetary steps in catalytic cycles in homogeneous catalysis: ligand dissociation, oxidative addition, insertion and deinsertion in M-C, transmetallation, electrophilic/nucleophilic attack on coordinated ligands, sigma-bond metathesis.
3) Activation of substrates with non polar single bonds, H-H, C-H.
4) Activation of substrates with polar single bonds: C-X, C-O, C-S.
5) Metal-carbene. Fisher and Schrock carbenes.
6) 1,2-insertion, beta-elimination.
7) Reductive elimination.
