Learning objectives

During this course ,the student learns to make use of measurement techniques and to discuss critically the obtained data.

<br />Introductory corse in elementary calculus

Course unit content

<br /> ''Measure units and systhems.Elements of metrology. Instruments for mechanical measurements''.<br />Introduction to c.c circuits: Ohm’s law.<br />Instruments for electrical and electronic measurements, analogical and digital multimeters, oscilloscope.<br />Metrology I:volume and mass measurements.<br />Metrology II: resistence measurements by means of the volt-amperometric method.<br />Introductions to error analysis I.st part.<br />Sistematic and random errors: how to define and rapresent them.<br />Significant digits. Estimation and propagation of measurement uncertainty.<br />Statistical analisysis of random errors: average, standard deviation, standard deviation of the average.<br />Frequency distribution and limit distribution. Gauss distribution. <br />Introduction to the use of electronic data sheets, for the statistical collection and representation  of experimental data.<br />The  normal distribution: error function and probabilistic interpretation.<br />Data rejection. Chauvenet’s criterium. Weighted averages.<br />Experimental study of the law of gravitation; determination of the gravity acceleration with statistical error analysis.<br />Experimental study of the law governing the oscillating harmonic motion: determination of the elastic constant of a spring.<br />Experimental study of a linear viscous motion: Verification of the Stoke’s law and determination of the viscosity of a fluid (glycerin).<br />Experimental study of a circular viscous motion: analysis of the damped motion of a wheel.<br />Dynamics of a rigid body as it rolls down on an inclined plane: experimental determination of the inertia momentum.<br />Experimental study of the law of the armonic oscillatory motion as regards a torsion pendulum: determination of the Young’s modulus for a wire.<br />Experimental study of Bernoulli and Poiseuille laws:determination of the emptying law for a container under conditions of ideal and viscous regime.<br />Study of the propagation of sound waves: detecting of the resonance conditions for stationary waves in a Kundt pipe: measurement of the speed of sonds.
