Learning objectives

<br />A good knowledge of the fundamental principles of the classical mechanics applied to a single particle. A satisfying mastery of the fundamental elements of the calculus, in order to correlate causes (forces) and effects (motion or equilibrium) and to solve the motion equation by determining the dynamic state of a single particle as a function of particular hypothesis (boundary conditions). .An efficient ability  in distinguishing between a particular and a general approach. A comprehensive point of view of classical mechanics as an asymptotic approximation of the general mechanics of macro and micro cosm .

Course unit content

<br />  experimental uncertainties .<br /><br />3. Dynamics of a single particle ( 8 lectures): Newton’s law and the principles of Dynamics : mass and weight. constraining forces, viscous forces). Restoring forces and free harmonic oscillations: pendulum, spring.  <br />4. Relative Motions (5 lectures): Newton’s laws in accelerated frames: apparent forces.<br />5. Gravitation  ( 2 lectures): <br />6. Work and Mechanical Energy: Work done by a force, power. Kinetic, potential and mechanical energy . Work-energy theorem .Conservative and non conservative forces. Conservation of the mechanical energy. Force and potential energy: equilibrium.<br />7. Dynamics of rotational motion : Mechanical momentum (Torque) of a force applied to a particle. Angular momentum of a particle . Conservation law of the angular momentum.<br />

Teaching methods

<br /><br /><br />Planning of the course: The overall course is scheduled in three course units (modules) , 4 credits  each, for a final assignment of 12 credits. The present first course unit or module is scheduled in the first period ( autumn term) and it consists of 32 hours, corresponding to 4 credits.<br />The present course unit includes: lectures, problem class and tests (continuous assessment). Extra hours are also available for tutorials or small group teaching .<br />Also the lectures are organised on the basis of an interactive approach to the class: collective discussions on particular topics, illustrations of attractive examples and frequent references to practical applications and  to experiments.<br />The course unit activity is strongly correlated to the parallel Laboratory of Mechanics course units.<br /><br />Exam: Continuos assessment,consisting in a number of written, and oral tests performed  during the teaching period and used to monitor  the student progress and contribute to theoverall assessment of the three course unit (final exam).<br /><br />
