Learning objectives

To provide the first-year students of Natural Sciences degree the basic and propaedeutic concepts of chemistry essential to deal with the organic, biological, environmental chemistry and mineralogy.

No specific chemical knoweledge required

Course unit content

<p> Matter: its properties and measurement. Thermochemistry. Atomic structure, properties of atoms. Basic concepts of chemical bonding, molecular geometry and bonding theories, intermolecular forces. Gaseous, liquid and solid states. Properties of solutions. Chemical kinetics. Chemical equilibrium. Acids, bases and salts in aqueous solution. Thermodynamics. Electrochemistry. Introduction to inorganic chemistry: properties and main compounds of s and p blocks elements, properties and main compounds of the most frequent transition elements. </p>
