Learning objectives

The main aims of the course are: <br />
o to reach an understanding of the psychodynamics of adult psychopathology according to the most important theories underlying clinical psychodynamics (ego psychology, theory of object relations, psychology of the self and post-modern perspectives); <br />
o to reach an understanding of the main differences between descriptive diagnoses and psychoanalytic diagnoses, with particular reference to personality disorders; <br />
o to reach an understanding of the most important theories of western thinking in relation to personality evaluation; <br />
o to reach an understanding of the evolutionary journey of disabled persons, from childhood to adulthood; <br />
o to reach a critical understanding of the variables which can broaden or limit existential possibilities for people with disabilities; <br />
o to reach an understanding of the personal and social implications of carer relationships. <br />

Prerequisites

Recommended prerequisites: basic knowledge of Dynamic Psychology.

Course unit content

The course will provide an understanding of the psychodynamics of adult psychopathology. The most important theories underlying clinical psychodynamics (ego psychology, theory of object relations, psychology of the self and post-modern perspectives) and the psychodynamic evaluation of patients. The main differences between descriptive diagnoses and psychoanalytic diagnoses will be outlined, with particular emphasis on personality disorders. <br />
The most important theories of western thinking in relation to personality evaluation will be explored. <br />
A part of the course will focus on disability studies in relation to psychodynamics, with particular emphasis on professional reverie. <br />

Teaching methods

Examination methods <br />
Students must deliver a term paper to the secretary’s office 20 days before the exam date. The term paper must illustrate a personality disorder (Axis II) from a psychodynamic perspective. It must be typed in Times 12 with double lines and be a maximum of 5 pages in length. <br />
The exam will be on the bibliography specified for the course and discussion of the written work. It will consist of a written part and an oral part. <br />
The final result will be based on the term paper and the exam. <br />
