Learning objectives
To learn and be able to use ethnographic methods for data collection and analysis.
Prerequisites
Basic notions of cultural psychology.
Course unit content

The course will present a study approach to developmental psychology that emphasises the importance of language and of children’s participation in social and cultural routines. It will deal with three issues in particular. The first concerns the origins and consolidation of peer culture, with specific reference to the process of interpretative reproduction. In this part, the characteristics of play routines will be discussed, along with the functions that they perform in building social skills, and aspects that emerge in peer cultures during childhood and pre-adolescence. The second topic concerns the characteristics of the ethnographic method, with special reference to the participant observation method, which entails the researcher’s direct involvement with the research subjects and the collection of data through narrative accounts. Finally, there will be a classroom-based presentation and discussion of research contributions that share the paradigm of language socialisation, which is based on the assumption that language acquisition is deeply tied to the process through which one becomes a competent member of the social community.
