Integrated course unit module: LABORATORY FOR MACHINERY AND TECHNICAL PHYSICS

Learning objectives

The purpose of the laboratory is to provide the student the knowledge and application methodology on two specific aspects of fluid machinery and energy systems: the importance of the experimental defintion of characteristic curves of fluid machines (providing the knowledge needed to properly develop and use of results) and plant design as a system of components (fluid machinery, heat exchangers, combustion chambers).

Course unit content

The theory of measurement. Quality Measure. Analysis of the 'measurement uncertainty.
Concepts of dimensional analysis and similarity theory. Characteristic curves of turbomachinery. Representations based on dimensionless parameters defined by the similarity theory. Example of application to turbomachinery. Testing of centrifugal pumps.
Techniques and criteria for the construction of models of energy systems using elementary submodels. Coupling of elementary models: independent and dependent variables, causality. Assessment of the behavior of an energy system in terms of stationary and transient operation. Application examples. The matching of compressor, combustion chamber and turbine in a gas turbine plant.
