Learning objectives

This course aims at providing basic knowledge on use and behaviour of electric drives in industrial environment, and at producing designers of factory automation.

Prerequisites

Mathematics, Calculus, electric circuit theory, Physics.

Course unit content

DC machines<br />Principle of operation. Construction of DC motors. Brush, collectors, Salient poles, and permanent magnets. Equivalent circuit. Power balance and efficiency. Torque and mechanical characteristics. Speed control and regulation. Torque control. <br />
High performance control of permanent magnet DC machine. Design of current and speed feedback control. Torque disturbance rejection. Current and Voltage saturation and wind-up effect.
Four quadrant chopper: two and three level modulation. Resistive and capacitive brake. Constant torque and constant power safe operating area. Thermal protection and duty cycle. RElative and absolute encoder, Resolver.
