Learning objectives

The course aims to reconstruct and interpret the evolution of credit, financial and international monetary systems from the 19th century to modern times, addressing those students wishing to research bank and finance history, and to understand the main milestones in their evolution, in order to understand the differences between the various systems and assess the potential development.

Course unit content

<br />The introduction will cover the progress made in this sector in modern times, looking in detail at some technical innovations that, created now, would have contributed to accelerating development during the period of industrialisation (securities, bank notes, stock market, etc.). The second part illustrates the evolution of the banking system from the 19th century to modern times, (central banks, the English, German, French and Italian banking systems). The third part will concentrate on the birth and evolution of the international monetary system from the implementation of the l gold standard to modern times.
