Learning objectives

Illustrate the linguistic passage from the koine of the Po Valley in the late 1400s to the new literary Tuscan codified by the first grammar treatises of the 1500s and imposed by printing. A prime example of this passage is seen in the editorial changes made in Castiglione’s “Cortegiano” for the Aldine edition of 1528.

Prerequisites

Although not mandatory, at least 10 university credits earned during the three-year degree in one of the Italian linguistics courses is strongly recommended for this course. Mandatory in the event of a degree thesis request.

Course unit content
Linguistic evolution of the ancient municipal scriptae and formation of the koine in the fifteenth century, through a number of key examples (Mantua, etc.). Confluence of the koine and written Tuscan literature between the 15th and 16th centuries.

Teaching methods

Classroom lectures are supplemented by seminars for individual students or homogeneous groups of students in which a particular aspect or text of the topic being covered is examined, including supplementary bibliographical and specialised sources.

Evaluation is based on the level of specialisation of the student and, therefore, since the fundamentals of the subject are taken as given, emphasis is placed on in-depth knowledge of the texts and linguistic issues covered. In addition, any specialised oral or written research work assigned to the graduate student is evaluated, using criteria and evaluation methods used to assess a degree thesis chapter.
