Learning objectives
<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Students in this advanced level course will learn to read a philosophy text critically and to compare the Italian translation with the original language text, focusing on vocabulary and those passages that are especially important for comprehending the thought of the writer.<br />Ability to access bibliographical documentation and keep abreast of current debate, including through regular consultation of philosophy journals.<br />Ability to prepare a short critical essay on a philosophical topic or a review of a critical work. The oral examen consists of an independently -preparated essay of the issues covered and discussion of this essay that will be submitted and corrected<br /> <br />before the exam. <br />
Prerequisites
<br />
Ability to orient oneself in the principal issues of the history of philosophy thanks to direct knowledge of the classics based on reading of the works. Ability to read works in at least one foreign language. Basic knowledge of the Greek and German philosophical lexicon.<br />
Knowledge of research techniques and bibliographic documentation.<br />
Regular consultation of the main Italian and foreign philosophy journals to remain up-to-date on contemporary philosophical debate.<br />

Advanced degree in Philosophy – Course Title: Differences in Intentionality</p>
<p><br />
<br />
In the Psychology from an empirical point of view (1874) Brentano has developped the theory of intentionality, showing all the complexity of the acts of representing, judging, knowing the reality. In the Classification of the psychic phenomena, Brentano emphasizes the distinction of such phenomena in three classes: representations, judgements, affections/volitions. The course aims to provide the conceptual analysis of the relations among the different modalities of intentional acts, dealing with the problem of the foundation of the acts and with the problem of the integration of knowing and valuing in the representation of the reality. <br />

Teaching methods
<br /> <br /> <br /><br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Unit B of the History of Philosophy course will provide students in the two-year advanced program the required historical and theoretical background to take un the specific topics in Unit C, that is organised to alternate classroom lectures with seminar work. Through detailed analysis of a major work in the history of thought – the translation of whose key passages are checked against the original text – students will become acquainted with a specific moment in the history of philosophy and the forms of conceptual analysis and argumentation used to take on a series of issues. During the seminars, students will present in-depth readings they have done on their own and will also plan a written work.<br />The oral exam consists of an independently-prepared essay of the issues covered and discussion of this essay that will be submitted and corrected before the exam. <br />
