Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student should acquire the basic notions regarding the etiologic agents of infectious diseases (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths and viruses), their interactions with the host, their pathogenic role, the problems related to the emergence and spread of resistance to antimicrobial and antiviral drugs, and healthcare-associated infections.
A further objective of the course is to provide the ability to apply in occupational contexts the knowledge and understanding acquired in the field of Microbiology and the required communication skills.

Teaching methods

The course will be carried out by classroom lessons considering all the topics of the program to generate an integrated overview of the field.
The teacher will receive students by appointment for explanations and tutoring activities.

Assessment methods and criteria

Learning outcomes are verified through a written test (10 multiple-choice questions of Microbiology). The time allotted for taking the test is 20 minutes. Each correct answer contributes 1 point to the determination of the final grade (out of thirthy). There is no penalty for incorrect answers. The results of the written test is announced after the correction at the end of the test. In case of positive evaluation for the written test (i.e. at least 6 questions correctly answered), the student will be required to take a brief oral discussion with the teacher. The discussion will cover aspects of the written test or other points of the program. The overall evaluation of the integrated exam will take into account both tests (written and oral) for each module.
