Learning objectives
Basis of structural mechanics and geotecnical engineering to design very simply RC and steel structures.
Course unit content
The concepts of Statics and Strength of Materials are extended to steel and reinforced concrete structures. A very simple reinforced concrete building is designed according to the Eurocodes.
Full programme
- Structural failures
- Structural conception of RC structures, steel structures, precast buildings, towers, roofs.
- Bracings in steel and concrete structures
- Actions
- Single degree of freedom linear oscillator, spectra, seismic actions
- Structural safety, limit states, characteristic strength
- Buckling of a column
- Design of RC beams and columns
