Course unit content

Cartography: general characteristics, from its origins to the present day, introduction to numeric cartography. "Vector cartography": analysis of the various types used, methods of acquisition and use, editing examples. "Raster cartography": analysis of the various types used, examples of CTR (Regional Technical Map) and orthophoto, methods of acquisition and use, editing examples. Computerized description of the territory: conceptual model, descriptive characteristics and specifications, practical realization, examples and fields of use. Cartography, digital model of the terrain and territorial information systems: analysis of the various characteristics of these tools for "reading" and representing the territory and the environment, applicative examples and introduction to realization methods. First case of study: "From the data of a survey to the production, also automatic, of block plans to various scales": Introduction, organization of the work, provided input, expected output, "importation" of data, control, "certification", examination of criticalities and correction of data, analysis of symbols in relation to the various scales of representation, definition of standard tables, determination of the index maps and production of tables, analysis of the results, definition of delivery methods and organization of delivery. Second case of study: "Digital Terrain Model (DTM)": Introduction, organization of the work, provided input, expected output, criticality of the data for production of a DTM, data checking, production of the DTM with triangles and examination of the results, generation of contour lines, cross-sectioning and examples of use. Elements of geodesy and cartography: introduction to geodesy, "fields of competence" of geodesy and topography, main problems and applicative formulas of geodesy. Map representation methods and related problems. Classification of maps and official Italian cartography. Main operations on the map.
