Learning objectives

The student knows and understands the information required to design and conduct experimental investigations in the laboratory or wind tunnel;
He/she is able to acquire knowledge independently concerning the principles and applications of innovative techniques in the field of fluid dynamics which have been successfully developed in recent years;
Is able to analyse, interpret and critically evaluate the results of experiments with independent judgement;

He/she is able to find the necessary information to tackle new problems and to design the experiment as a whole according to the investigation and the results to be obtained.

Prerequisites

It is advisable to have passed the Fluid Mechanics exam.

Course unit content

The course aims to provide the student with the tools to tackle the study of the interaction between wind and structures. Models of wind generation and characteristics are analysed on the basis of the physics of the atmosphere, with a description of the statistics used to describe the random velocity field that develops in the Earth's atmospheric boundary layer. The fluid-dynamic aspects induced by the presence of bodies immersed in the fluid vein of elongated or squat geometry are then analysed, defining the fundamental parameters governing the physical phenomenon. The similarity criteria adopted for wind tunnel modelling are introduced, with a description of the different types of wind tunnels. The measuring instruments used are introduced and described. Finally, the analytical and numerical models most frequently adopted in CFD are introduced.
