Learning objectives
Architectural surveying is the most appropriate scientific means to get to know and understand the creative, formal and technological-construction components of buildings architecture. It is an irreplaceable tool for acquiring in-depth knowledge of the work of those who have preceded us in “making” architecture. It becomes an indispensable element for working out projects for restoring and conserving our existing architectural heritage, as well as a basis for all architectural projects in general; these, in any case are grafted onto an environment which has already become anthropic and which they must take into account. Knowledge of what surrounds our intervention or knowledge of the subject of our design, is not only culturally and therefore ethically an absolute necessity, for the purpose of conscientiously working out an architectural intervention that is responsible, but also professionally required by existing planning regulations. The aim of the course is therefore to give the student a knowledge of the methodologies useful for overcoming problems relating to architectural and urban surveys, carry them out and reproduce them graphically, finalising operations for the acquisition and elaboration of critical, historical, technical and operational aspects, for which the survey itself may be intended.

Course unit content
The topics covered in the course will be, first of all, those pertaining to analysis of the ideational contents of an architectural unit, in close relationship with themes found in scientific and historical literature. Following this, the themes of perception, surveying and graphic portrayal in the proper scale will be analysed, through the acquisition of various surveying methods. Towards this purpose classical elements of which the major part of the architecture of the past is comprised, will be studied. The phases of defining the survey, from working drawings to detail drawings, will be accompanied by specific examination on topics to be portrayed using a graphic transcription of materials and levels of surface decoration. <br />

Teaching methods
The course consists of three separate and subsequent phases that are articulated as follows: lectures on problems relating to the history and evolution of survey and representation methods, the preliminary documentation required to know the surveyed objec<br />
At the end of the first course phase, that is to say the lectures, students must answer a series of questions concerning the specialized reading "Il disegno di un'utopia; il ruolo del disegno e del rilievo nel progetto di architettura e nelle trasformazioni urbane di Parma tra il XVIII e XIX secolo” by Paolo Giandebiagggi; the aim of these questions is to assess the knowledge students have acquired of the above mentioned specialized reading i.e. the role of the survey and of the drawing in the architectural knowledge. At the same time students will answer further questions for the assessment of the learning progress concerning the theoretical lectures of the course and the themes covered by the practical exercises. Students who pass the above mentioned questionnaires will be exempted from the oral part of the final examination.
