Integrated course unit module: FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING

Learning objectives

The course aims to supply students, through the development of practical exercises conducted independently by practising freehand drawing, with the mastery of manual and mental tools of design as a method of study through the two-dimensional representation of the spatial reality or, in other words, of architectural forms and lines. The following are needed for this: knowledge of the main concepts, methods and techniques of plane representation and their historical and contemporary use, the acquisition of the main “forms” of drawing as the language of architecture, the identification of the relationships between architectural forms, elementary geometry and its mathematical reference-models, practice in manual drawing as a mental reference, through graphic study of complex forms and surfaces with identification of the constituent elements and of the laws governing the relationships, up to the “reconstruction” of simplified explanatory models.

Course unit content

relationships between drawing, geometry and architecture, ‘models’ of reality and representation ‘dimensions, 2D reality: drawing - procedures and techniques in the historical representation of architecture. Drawing modes - perception and description. Scientific representation methods - projections. Drawing languages - technical conventions. Mental drawing tools - order and proportion (modules, grids, symmetries and repetitions). Drawing rules - shape and transformation (aggregation and growth, dimensions, directions, guidelines). Teaching methods

The contents of the course are acquired through coordinated teaching with the other teaching units of the course based on the basic specific subjects of architectural representation. The knowledge students have acquired of the fundamental tools used in this discipline and their capacity to tackle and study autonomously a spatial and/or formal problem will be evaluated through a drawing with an in-depth study of a single examination topic under different view-points, that are specific for the three subjects.
