Learning objectives

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- remember the phases of a bibliographic search;
- plan and carry out bibliographic searches with Pubmed and CINAHL;
- understand the structure of a scientific article;
- summarize the main results and analyze the methodological aspects of a scientific article.

Course unit content

Principles of Evidence Based Nursing (EBN) and Evidence Based Practice (EBP).
From the clinical-care problem to bibliographic research: the PICOM method.
The types of clinical trials. Systematic reviews and meta-analyzes.
Anatomy of scientific literature. Primary and secondary documents.
The scientific article: structure, type and relevance of articles in scientific journals.
The main bibliographic databases in medicine.
Pubmed structure. How to conduct a bibliographic search: the stages of a bibliographic search. Query syntax and Boolean operators. The query language: free search and search by fields with MeSH (Medical Subject Headings). The methodological filters. Examples of bibliographic research with Pubmed.
Bibliographic search with the Cinahl database.
