Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to provide an overview on medicinal plants included in most common Pharmacopoeias. Particular emphasis will be devoted to provide the students with all the cultural tools necessary to comprehend the interdisciplinary nuances of Pharmaceutical Botany and its links with Pharmacognosy, Organic Chemistry, Botany, Sistematic Botany and Biology.

Prerequisites

Although not mandatory, a good knowledge of Vegetal Biology is strongly advised

<br /><br />Historical aspects of Pharmaceutical Botany; the meaning and usefulness of taxonomy and sistematics<br />Diagnostic markers in sistematics: leaf, flower, fruit, seed.<br />The relevance of the secondary metabolism: secretive tissues and structures. The role of the vacuole. Physioecological significance of the secondary metabolism in plants<br />Factors affecting the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites: biotic and abiotic, genetic and non-genetic, endogenous and exogenous. Breeding and selection. Differences between cultivated and wild medicinal plants.<br />Monographs of medicinal plants.
