Learning objectives
The course will furnish the fundamental tools for the structural identification of medium-complex organic compounds through the use of the latest techniques of spectroscopic analysis.
Prerequisites
The examination of "Organic Chemistry I" must be passed.
Course unit content
This course in aimed at furnishing a general guide for the spectroscopic identification of organic compounds. Focus will be pointed on the practical aspects of the matter, while the description of the theory of each spectroscopic method will be discussed briefly.
This course surveys the field of mass spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and particularly the one of 1H e 13C nuclear magnetic resonance ( mono and bidimensional experiments).
Instrumentation, theory of the experiment and analitycal aspects will be discussed for each spectroscopic methods. Useful and selected exercises will guide the student through the use of different metodologies to the identification of the molecular structure of both simple and complex molecules together with their configurational, conformational and stereochemical features.
R. M. SILVERSTEIN, F. WEBSTER, D. J. Kiemle 'Identificazione Spettrometrica di Composti Organici', Casa Editrice Ambrosiana, Milano, 2006.
This book is an important and useful guide for both the theoretic part and the exercises.
Teaching methods
The final examination is a written test in wich the student will have to identify the structure and the stereochemistry of an organic compound, through the analisys of different data, obtained by spectroscopic techniques.
