Learning objectives

<br />The purpose of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge regarding the techniques of extraction, purification and identification of health-related substances.

Course unit content

<br />Introductory part covering safety and injury prevention issues: general norms for laboratory procedures. <br /><br /><br />Primary methods of isolation and purification: extraction using solvents, crystallisation, distillation, chromatographic methods. <br /><br /><br />General structural survey information and methods: characterisation and identification of substances. <br /><br /><br />Experimental part with lab work that will include isolation, purification and identification of known substances.
